Dresses for pregnancy and post-pregnancy

Clothes you won't put away after four months. Stretchy ribbed cotton adapts to your body and returns to shape, so you can wear the same dress before pregnancy, through most of it, and long after childbirth. These are not maternity clothes: they don't have panels or adjustments. They are simply flexible enough to go through this whole period with you and stay with you longer.

Maternity clothes that aren't maternity clothes

Typical maternity wear has one flaw: it ends with the pregnancy. You buy a few pieces for four, maybe five months, and then they sit in your wardrobe because the belly panel and cut designed for a baby bump are visible even when the bump is gone. It's a purchase for one season of life.

Our approach is different because we come from the other direction. We don't design maternity clothes that can be worn later. We design regular, good quality clothes, and because we sew them from very stretchy knit fabric, most of them naturally adapt through pregnancy. No panels, no adjustments, no cut that reveals their purpose. A dress you buy now will stay in your wardrobe for years; pregnancy will just be one of the periods you wear it.

Why stretchy knit fabric works with a changing body

The body changes unevenly and at different rates during pregnancy: first the bust, then the waist, and finally the belly. No rigid fabric can keep up with this, which is why classic dresses made from shirt or suit fabrics stop fitting as early as the second trimester.

Ribbed knit fabric works the opposite way. The longitudinal weave stretches much more in width than smooth knit fabric, a property of the weave structure itself, which works like an accordion. Additionally, 5% elastane ensures the material returns to its original shape instead of being stretched permanently. In practice, this means the same dress fits smoothly before pregnancy, with a rounded belly, and several months after childbirth.

Natural cotton content is also important; 95% cotton is breathable and pleasant for the skin, which matters when you tend to overheat more easily during pregnancy. More about the weave and composition can be found on ourfabric page.

What works in which trimester

Honestly: not every style works for all nine months. Here's what you need to know before choosing.

First trimester, your silhouette changes minimally, but bloating and breast tenderness are common. Everything from our range in your usual size works here; elastic knit fabric is simply more comfortable than rigid fabrics and doesn't pinch.

Second trimester, the best time for fitted styles. The belly is already visible but not excessively large, and a ribbed dress hugs it smoothly and highlights it beautifully. This is the period when fitted midi dresses look best, hence their popularity for photo shoots.

Third trimester, here's a limitation we're upfront about: with a large belly, the hem of a fitted midi dress starts to ride up in the front, making the hemline uneven. This is a natural consequence of not having the elongated front that maternity cuts have. During this period, looser styles, maxi lengths, and a combination of a skirt worn under the belly with a looser top will work better.

Postpartum, the period nobody talks about

A lot is said about clothes during pregnancy. Much less about what to wear postpartum. And yet, this is when the most challenging wardrobe moment arises: pre-pregnancy clothes don't fit yet, and you don't want to see maternity clothes anymore. The body returns to shape over weeks or months, and during this entire time, you need something that simply looks good on you.

Here, stretchy knit fabric is in its element, adapting to your figure at every stage of recovery, without the need to buy interim sizes. A dress that fit well during pregnancy also fits well afterwards, and then returns to its original shape with you. You don't have to put it away or throw it out, you just keep wearing it.

Practical tip: clothes you found comfortable in your sixth month usually fit well in the first few weeks after childbirth. It's worth having them handy in your hospital bag and for the first few days at home.

Dress for a maternity photoshoot

A fitted, solid-colored dress is the most popular choice for maternity photoshoots, and for good reason. Smooth, clinging knit fabric shows the shape of the belly clearly and softly, without wrinkles or unnecessary fabric that distracts the shot. The solid color without a pattern ensures attention goes where it should.

For photos, midi and maxi lengths in deep, saturated colors work best: black, burgundy, chocolate, and ecru. The longitudinal ribbed weave also creates a delicate texture that works beautifully in light, giving the color a depth that smooth fabric lacks. The second trimester and the beginning of the third are the best times for this type of photo.

How to choose a style and how to style it

Midi dresses, are best in the first and second trimesters and postpartum. The fitted cut highlights the belly in a way that many women find most appealing.

Maxi dresses, the safest choice for the third trimester. The longer style has extra fabric, so the problem of the hem riding up is much less significant than with midi.

Skirt and top set, a solution for late pregnancy and the first few weeks postpartum.Ribbed skirtwith an elastic waist is worn under the belly, and a loosertopon top; the set adapts to each stage and is easy to adjust.

Styling: an outer layer solves most problems. An unbuttoned cardigan, a long coat, or a shirt draped over a fitted dress creates a vertical line at the sides that visually streamlines the silhouette. Pair with flat ankle boots or sneakers; heels become less appealing in the third trimester anyway.

How to choose a size for pregnancy

The most important rule: in most cases, stick to your usual size. Stretchy knit fabric has plenty of give and will adapt to your growing belly; buying a larger size "just in case" usually results in the dress being baggy in the shoulders and bust, thus fitting poorly throughout the entire wearing period.

Go by your bust measurement; it grows earliest and most predictably, and in fitted styles, it determines comfort. XS/S corresponds to a bust of 83–95 cm, M/L to 96–110 cm. Full measurements can be found in thesize chart, and a detailed guide on choosing a style for your figure in the articlehow to choose the size and style of a ribbed dress.

If you're between sizes or buying in the third trimester and are unsure, email us at contact@nudyess.com with your BUST – WAIST – HIPS measurements in centimeters and your week of pregnancy. We'll advise on a specific size and style instead of you guessing.

One knit fabric, several life stages

Pregnancy is a time when capsule thinking particularly pays off: instead of a separate wardrobe for each stage, a few items made from one stretchy material that combine with each other and adapt to your changing body. Our entireribbed wardrobeis sewn from the same knit fabric in matching colors, so a dress, skirt, and top create cohesive sets without guessing shades.

How to build such a capsule step by step is described in our article on theribbed capsule wardrobe. During pregnancy, this logic works even more strongly than usual, because each piece serves you for several months instead of just one season.

How to care for stretchy knit fabric

Elastane is responsible for the knit fabric returning to shape after stretching, and it's this that needs to be protected most, especially when the material is working harder than usual. Wash inside out, at temperatures up to 30°C, on a delicate cycle, with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and strong spinning.

Do not tumble dry; high temperatures destroy elastane fibers, and the dress permanently loses its elasticity. Dry flat, not on a hanger, because wet knit fabric stretches under its own weight. With such care, the material will maintain elasticity throughout your pregnancy and long afterwards.

FAQ, frequently asked questions

Are these maternity clothes?

Not in the classic sense; they don't have a belly panel, waist adjustment, or a nursing system. These are regular dresses made from very stretchy ribbed cotton that, thanks to the fabric's elasticity, work well for most of pregnancy and postpartum. Their advantage is that you keep wearing them after pregnancy ends.

Will a ribbed dress work in the third trimester?

Partially. With a large belly, the hem of a fitted midi dress might ride up in the front because the style doesn't have the elongated front typical of maternity cuts. For the third trimester, we recommend maxi length, looser styles, or a set of a skirt worn under the belly with a looser top.

What size should I choose during pregnancy?

In most cases, your usual size; the knit fabric has plenty of stretch. Buying a larger size "just in case" usually results in the dress being baggy in the shoulders and bust. Go by your bust circumference: XS/S is 83–95 cm, M/L is 96–110 cm. If in doubt, write to contact@nudyess.com, providing your measurements and week of pregnancy.

Will I be able to wear this dress after childbirth?

Yes, that's the main point of this collection. The stretchy knit fabric adapts to your figure at every stage of recovery, and since the style has no maternity-specific elements, the dress simply looks like a dress. You keep wearing it for as long as you wish.

Will the knit fabric stretch out and not return to shape?

No, if you take care of it. 5% elastane is responsible for returning to its original form, and the dense weave from the Polish knitting mill is resistant to stretching. The condition is washing at 30°C and flat drying; a tumble dryer destroys elastane, and that's the only way to permanently damage the elasticity of the knit fabric.

Can these dresses be used for breastfeeding?

They don't have a nursing system, no hidden zippers, snaps, or layered designs. Models with a deeper or wrap neckline will be more comfortable in this regard than high-necked ones, but if nursing is crucial for you, it's worth looking for clothes with a dedicated solution.

What dress for a maternity photoshoot?

A fitted, solid-colored dress, midi or maxi length, in a deep color like black, burgundy, chocolate, or ecru. Smooth, clinging knit fabric shows the belly's shape clearly and without wrinkles, and the lack of a pattern ensures nothing distracts from the shot. The best time for photos is the second trimester and the beginning of the third.

Is a maternity dress suitable for work?

Yes, models with a high neckline and midi length meet office dress codes, and the knit fabric doesn't wrinkle when sitting. This is a practical advantage during a period when comfort at the desk is more important than usual.
